Amrapali (Ambapali)
In my childhood (when I was 10 years old) my
mother showed me one calendar, it had beautiful dancers’ portrait. I was inspired
by one specific dancer's portrait (Amrapali) and decided that one day I will
paint one. The color combination and way of representation of the painting was mesmerizing.
In the year 2002, I finally completed the painting with few changes from my
side,as i was having a final look on my completed painting it felt i was sent
back in back in time. I would like to dedicate this painting to my mother and
the real artist. I do not know the name of the real artist but after seeing
this painting i am now a biggest fan of him \her work. As for my mother she is
a professional artist(M.A.Fine art) who teaches me ,”how to paint”.

History of Amrapali
Amrapali was
most beautiful dancer in Buddha period. The historians opined that Amrapali was
declared the "most beautiful" girl at the age of 11 and was later
made nagarvadhu and Vaishali Janpad Kalayani. Soon after being conferred the
title of nagarvadhu, Amrapali became the court dancer as per the rules of
Vaishali democracy. Vaishali, the capital of the Licchavi republic in ancient
India around 500 BC and Ajatashatru, the king of the Magadha empire, who falls
in love with her. Though he destroys Vaishali to get her, she in the meantime
has been transformed by her encounter with Gautama Buddha, of whom she becomes
a disciple and an Arahant herself. Her story finds mention in old Pali texts
and Buddhist traditions.
